What is stress?
Stress in itself is not an illness. It is actually a result of your response to excessive or prolonged pressures or challenges that you face. Whether or not you exhibit symptoms of stress will depend on whether you feel you can cope with those pressures or challenges. If you can cope, then all is well. If you feel you aren’t coping, you are likely to experience an adverse reaction to those pressures. Stress is very common and in recent times has become the most common cause of long-term sickness absence for employees. It can cause mental and/or physical ill health.
Psychological symptoms can include an inability to concentrate or make simple decisions, memory lapses, becoming rather vague or easily distracted, excessive worrying or thinking negatively.
Emotional symptoms can include tearfulness, mood swings, irritability, being sensitive to criticism, defensive or frustrated. Physical signs include aches and pains, muscle tension, teeth grinding, frequent colds or infections, allergies or skin irritations, weight loss or gain, dizziness or palpitations.
